Scaffold

A view of Southwark Bridge. July 20, 2005.

Die-hard

Light and shadow, a really good subject. I liked the way the light was falling on Dan's die-hard plant. It might seem silly, but in a way I feel this photo captured it's soul. Silly? Probably not.

my favorite vice

i would like to introduce the new category of "light and shadow"
which is one of my favorite photography subjects
shadows feel like stolen moments that often go unnoticed
always moving and morphing

Front Window

Late afternoon, from the front window which looks out to the sea. Soon the roses will stop blooming and give way to the approaching cold weather of autumn.

Cafe

A sneaky one taken from the coffee shop across the way. The streets behind Covent Garden. Missing London and all of it's charms. August 26, 2006.

Monkey See

True to my word I'm submitting my second window pic for this Wednesday in September. Today Dan and I went to Howlett's Wild Animal Park in Bekesbourne, near Canterbury. In case you are ever asked, Howlett's was the first zoo in the world to breed the honey badger... and perhaps more interestingly (albeit macabre) it managed to lose two keepers to the same Iberian tiger in 1980 and another keeper met his death cleaning a tiger cage in 1994 (amazing, innit?). So you're not too sad, this is a major conservation park, not just an excuse for people to cage animals up for their personal amusement... however, if I were to guess I would say those tigers in question were either extremely amused or extremely pissed off. Anyhow, this is a photo through the window of the gorilla colony enclosure. If you look carefully you can see some lovely primates in the background. If it was "Cage Wednesday" they might have appeared a bit more prominently, but they didn't really get all that close to this window when I was taking the pic. The gorillas were incredibly animated and playful. Loads of young and babies too. They seemed pretty content, even happy, but maybe that's because they haven't been talking to the tigers.

Segundo

Call it food for thought. Themes are good. I have no problem with themes. I agree the name of this theme could use some work, but the pics will be windows and we'll be doing this on Wednesdays so the name is better than Nule Post Nightly.

This is my kitchen window. I look out of this window quite a lot when I am acting out my 50's housewife role of cooking and cleaning. I'm not a 50's housewife. Presently, I cook and clean in exchange for food, shelter and artistic freedom. Dan makes this arrangement possible. He doesn't make me wear a housecoat. He doesn't wear a housecoat either. We are lacking in housecoats. I like Ward Cleaver, but June wasn't very artistic. I don't think June would understand the merits of wine, bread and cheese for dinner. Fortunately we have a dishwasher so I don't have dishpan hands.

Bananas are good. We always have bananas. They aren't always in this vase. They are actually never in this vase, but the cantaloupe didn't fit. I thought the bananas made the vase look more interesting, which made the window look more interesting. The kitchen window is in our rented bungalow. The kitchen isn't very interesting, but it works. The bungalow is home to many varieties of arachnid. This is interesting, but kind of frightening and icky. The window looks into the back garden. The garden is interesting in that it caters to many lovely birds. I can hear them twittering right now. The birds would like the spiders in the bungalow, but I don't know how to describe the flavor on the menu so I don't invite them in. The birds aren't annoying and icky at all. Especially the black birds. As far as I know, black birds have no connection to bananas.

episode primo

welcome to window wednesday.
this is the window in my office.

i have been a little busy these days, between job searching (which mostly consists of internet surfing, checking craigslist every 15 minutes, composing emails and attaching pdf's and waiting for no one to respond in any way shape or form, and crying) working on my one freelance project (which also makes me cry sometimes), cooking dinners and going to hot sweaty yoga 3x a week and planning for our upcoming vacation-type activities (i'm going to seattle for 3 days and then we are going to marfa for 3 days) so i haven't had much time for picture taking or blogging.

but i like the idea of themes and a series of similar images over time, so i hereby declare wednesdays to be "window wednesday" feel free to interpret "window" in any way you please, also feel free to not participate if you think "window wednesday" is a stupid idea. i know it doesn't sound very cool. kind of dorky, just because window and wednesday both start with W. (this was all really jak's idea) i would never think up something so dorky sounding, i might think up the window idea, but i wouldn't call it window wednesday, i would call it something cool like.........
damn, i can't think of anything cool........
i try to be cool

mt airy village fair

sheep, a baby cow, too much iced coffee, lots of cute dogs, lots of cute kids, lots of groovy looking ladies wearing cute shoes, raspberry vinegar, organic fruit pie eating contest, crunchy corn stuff, the donegan, hanging with zeus, luscious looking key lime pie we didn't get to taste, she ain't no angel, peanut butter cookie

Old Craggy Tree

On the Grounds of St. Mary's Church in the village of Chilham, yesterday. After a day of driving (riding, on my part), many stops and hot sun that was completely unexpected, Dan made the keen observation that I had unintentionally set my camera to a parameter of high contrast and high saturation --- thus revealing the reason why I was heard to say throughout the day "everything is blowing out!" and "why can't I get this shot?". The bright sun and subject matter
of black and white tudor buildings made photo-taking a bit on the frustrating side (a challenge even without the wrong settings). Soooo... the tree is one of the few photos that I liked in the end.

Other notable moments of the day: Magners at a 14th Century pub in Lenham,

...and a brave moment of entering the arachnid tent (only 50p!) at the Challock Goose Fair. I didn't actually touch a tarantula or... well... get closer than 6 feet to one, but I DID go in the tent. Dan's hand will recover eventually from the squeezing (read: vice-like grip).

(By the way, in case you think a goose fair might contain lots of geese... or even one for that matter, think again. Not a goose in sight, and by god I looked! Silly me, thinking there might be a goose...)

from A to ZED

i have been cleaning out my hard drive, sifting and sorting through folders full of images, trying to get things more organized. sometimes the images are funny time capsules, especially ones around the house where there is something with a back story in the background. like a shelf with mary's london street map book on it:

or some pictures of the house just after we painted.
it was fall and i had purchased some blood oranges and pears:

this image sets my taste buds to wanting some juicy blood oranges and all those other fall tastes that will soon be coming into season.

our "daytripping" today involved dumpster diving, unfortunately i did not bring my camera along (shame on me) i will try to share pictures of our plunders tomorrow

Twitching

Oare Marshes Nature Reserve ... a snap while trying to figure out where to go that might provide better photo ops. Shortly afterwards we were blocked in from leaving our parking spot on the side of the road by three camouflaged men, two lovely black dogs, and a car hauling a boat hauling something recently killed. Imagine the audacity of parking in a wildlife refuge for a convenient departure after getting your jollies killing the wildlife over an unprotected boundary. Something tells me they didn't give it much thought at all.

And for a lighter observation, we discovered that bird watchers - "Twitchers" - bear an uncanny resemblence to one another. Hmmm...

Sun and Storm

I'm not sure what homesick means anymore. It's a longing, but not for a place, no one place... at least as far as I can tell. It's people, yes, ... but also feelings, smells, tastes, memories and daydreams, sensations that no one has ever found a word to describe. It's comfort, but familiar discomfort as well. It's where sadness is cradled and soothed, where happiness is exalted. Homesickness is a longing, and for me a longing for something seemingly ever out of reach. I crossed the ocean, and the whole issue became more complicated than I could have imagined. Home isn't where you hang your hat... that I do know.

This is where I live. It's an area called Tankerton in the town of Whitstable. It's in Kent County in the Southeast of England, an hour and fifteen minutes from central London by train. It's a place that some people call home.

daydreaming of tejas and amigas

i have been feeling homesick lately, which can be difficult when more than one place feels like home. sometimes home is just somewhere with good friends, and all my friends are scattered/sprinkled from the northwest to the southwest to the windy city to the other side of the globe and beyond. my chica mary is living in whitstable which is too far away to meet up for a glass of wine, or a wee dram and girlie chat. so we have to a settle for a blog, which we can use to inspire/motivate/keep in touch with each other.
